Folk Fest Series Review: Yellow Deli (formerly Common Ground) Sure, I could make this simple dish at home, but Yellow Deli’s bean burrito was quick, satisfying, and came with refreshing side of watermelon. I also appreciated the whole wheat wrap amidst all the fluffy white buns at more popular and typical festival stalls. I wouldn’t pay festival prices in a regular cafe, knowing that a can of refried beans, jar of salsa, and pack of wraps is around the corner at the grocery store, but in a pinch, it was a much more filling choice than a footlong hot dog. Last year, I had the chicken rancher wrap, which was also simple but satisfying. The ingredients tasted fresh, and the mysterious toasted crunchies atop the wrap were delightful, even if they were unidentifiable. Yellow Deli will be opening in the fall, but for now, you can visit the new reincarnation of Common Ground at the Common Sense Market, located at 1490 des Meurons Street.

Favourite: Grandma’s Kettle Korn
Grandma’s Kettle Korn has become ubiquitous with Manitoba summer festivals in my memories. This sweet & salty concoction is made fresh on site, becoming so popular that you can now buy microwave versions that taste barely half as good. Kettle Korn can be a bit pricey, but combine this long bag of goodness with some fun friends and creative eating skills and you have at least 30 minutes of entertainment.
Back at the Fringe this year!

Shop: Tall Grass Prairie Bakery

Tall Grass Prairie doesn’t need my review. It’s got a dedicated following and plenty of new tastebuds wandering through the Forks to seduce. The whole wheat cinnamon buns are famous across Winnipeg and beyond.
There are a few other delicious bits to spotlight, though.
The cheese croissant is delicious. It’s got the standard topping of cheddar, but inside! Inside, there’s magic. Tender, flaky layers surrounding rich, cheesy goodness.
The vegetable bread pudding is a satisfying choice. Bread pudding conjures images of slap dash leftover concoctions for me, but this generous square is flavourful and packed with goodies. It can be a wee bit greasy from the cheese, but it’s ultimately awesome.
I love that their pies are baked in regular pans that you return for a deposit. The breads are wholesome and can be sliced to your preference. The local, freshly-milled wheat is all sorts of win. Service is always friendly. Why wouldn’t you shop here?
It’s time to get down to those farmers’ markets! See St. Norbert’s Harvest Schedule for an idea of what you’ll find.

Review: Maple Leaf Fudge
The Forks - (204) 943-7666
A sad day for sugar. I couldn’t even bring myself to call this a “Shop” entry. Can’t mislead my audience!
We bought a “bear claw” (almonds in caramel) and a half slice of chocolate and peanut butter fudge. Sounds promising, right? Wrong.
The bear claw was a mess - nowhere near solid. The caramel was melting and separated (quite the oily sheen) and the almonds were soft and tasted stale. Hard to ruin almonds and caramel, but there we go.
The chocolate and peanut butter fudge is still sitting on my dining room table. Three weeks later. Not very peanut buttery. Too crumbly.
For better sweets, visit Mordens’ on Sargent Avenue. The almond bark was fantastic in dark or milk chocolate.

Camping and barbecue season is upon us! If you are a true Winnipegger, you’ve consumed your fair share of kielbasa (garlic sausage, if you will) at social gatherings, not least the infamous Manitoba social. Out shopping for a bonfire recently, I spotted a wondrous creation: Kooby Dogs!
Made by Country Meat and Sausages in Bluemenort, MB, Kooby Dogs are hot dogs made from the well-loved kielbasa meat. They were well-received by Colleen, particularly wrapped in bannock infused with bacon drippings!
Try them out!
