Boon Burger’s proprietors, Tomas and Anneen, have scored themselves a sweet, little corner of the dining scene with their vegan burger joint. They’ve seen mad success with a string of good reviews, plus some smart marketing campaigns, so I’ll keep this review short and sweet.
Boon’s interior is fun and sociable, with two long bench tables that encourage mingling. Animal figurines act as table markers and nice, large bottles of those much-desired condiments dot all the surfaces. There’s a counter for help-yourself water, which is especially nice for folks like me who rarely order a drink, and a corner to tuck away the little ones as you chow down. It’s a nice atmosphere overall, and on a summer night, you can sit outside and enjoy the growing hubbub of West Broadway.
Ramon and I ended up at Boon on a whim late one warm, summer evening soon after it opened. We split the restaurant’s namesake, the Boon Burger along with a plate of vegan poutine. Though difficult to keep together, the mushroom-rice patty (the staple veggie patty, it seems) was good topped with red pepper peach chutney and cucumber onion, amongst other things. The poutine was passable, but I found the fries overdone, like they had been sitting in a warmer for too long (you can see the dryness in the above picture), and the gravy quickly got gelatinous as it cooled. And vegan cheese is just not the same.
The Thanksgiving burger

I returned for a spontaneous second visit with some folks from my photography club, and I’m really glad I did. All the dishes just seemed tighter, and the Thanksgiving Burger I ordered was fantastic. With a potato-encrusted “turkey” patty, topped with cranberry sauce, caramelized onion, maple-glazed yams, and gravy, it’s a mouthful of Thanksgiving heaven. Tomas was also very accommodating with a specially-priced pitcher of iced rooibos. Everyone enjoyed their meals and I’d definitely recommend Boon to all foodies, veggies and meat-eaters alike.
Iced rooibos

Review Reblog by winnipegvegan:
I finally settled on the Boon Burger (grilled mushroom-rice patty, mayo, dijon, homeade peach chutney, caramelized onion, sliced cucumber, tomato, sprouts and lettuce) and the Phish Burger (breaded “phish” patty, tartar sauce, picles, squeeze of lemon, tomato and lettuce). Both burgers were great, but the Boon Burger was especially delectable.
I think it’s safe to say Boon is grilling up Winnipeg’s best veggie burger (though I’d even argue they’ve got the best burgers period). I can’t wait to try the rest of their menu.
