Review: White House Bakery

One of the greatest summers of my life involved a photography road trip through southwestern Manitoba. Did you know Manitoba made National Geographic’s Drives of a Lifetime?
This bucolic ramble among the rolling prairie hills, highlands, and river valleys of western Manitoba loops through the heart of the region’s richest farm country.
If you decide to take this “bucolic ramble,” make sure to stop by White House Bakery when you’re in Riding Mountain National Park. It’s a cute, little place close to the waterfront in Wasagaming (though, everything is close to the water in Wasagaming, I think).
Nic and I had packed it in early, abandoning a soggy sleep in our tent - I am apparently incapable of choosing dry, high land - and we were driving around rather aimlessly when we came across three rather inebriated people searching for food. After offering them a sandwich or some delicious peanut butter chocolate cupcakes, we made a date to breakfast together at 7am.
It turns out my innocent attempt at friendship resulted in a breakfast with The Crazy, capitals intended. Our conversation spiraled into terribleness with the woman (girl?) in the group, but the food was good!
Nic tried the breakfast special and I ordered the eggs benedict. Both breakfast platters came out picture perfect, with all components properly poached, scrambled, fried, toasted, and garnished. I couldn’t detect an ounce of “packaged far, far away and defrosted for your pleasure,” which is always a pleasant revelation at breakfast. My only quibble would be that the Hollandaise was too tangy for my tastes, though it had the perfect texture.
Service was pleasant but unremarkable, though since we were dealing with The Crazy, maybe our waitress was trying to avoid The Crazy. Go have breakfast here!
